Marshall sculpsit, representing Charles with the crown of thorns in his right hand. Authorship of the Eikon basilike was originally attributed to Charles I, but according to Madan (pp. 125-33) it was written by John Gauden who probably included some authentic writings of the king. The imprint is false. Cf. Madan. In this issue, the "Eikon basilike" lacks the "Explanation of the embleme" and the portrait of Charles II as Prince of Wales; this issue also appeared separately.
